The 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva marked a proud moment for the MENA region as Egypt’s Vice-Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Amr Mohamed Kandeel, received a prestigious WHO public health prize for his role in steering Egypt to WHO certification for the elimination of measles, rubella, malaria, and trachoma. Egypt was not alone in this achievement — Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia also received WHO certificates of achievement for trachoma elimination, signalling a broader regional public health advance.
The awards were presented during a plenary session by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, recognising leaders who have advanced primary health care, reduced inequities, and brought the goal of health for all closer to reality.
