Gaza Health System on the Brink: Over 9,000 Chickenpox Cases in Two Weeks as Kidney Patients Face Dialysis Shortages

Gaza Health Crisis Worsens

The humanitarian and health situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate sharply, with over 9,000 chickenpox cases reported across 130 health facilities in just two weeks — half of them in Khan Younis.

Al-Shifa Hospital Crisis
Al-Shifa Hospital is facing a severe shortage of sodium bicarbonate, directly affecting haemodialysis services for approximately 240 patients with end-stage kidney disease. About 45-50% of dialysis machines are currently out of service, forcing emergency measures. Patients are increasingly reporting fatigue, clinical deterioration, and elevated risks of cardiac and respiratory complications.

Displacement Crisis
More than 1.7 million people remain in active displacement sites across Gaza, with site management coverage limited to just 34% of locations. Widespread rodent and ectoparasite infestations are reported in 83% of assessed displacement sites, alongside sewage in streets, accumulated solid waste, and poor sanitation conditions.

Long-Term Impact
WHO estimates that rebuilding Gaza’s health infrastructure will require $10 billion in investment over five years, following the destruction of more than 1,800 health facilities since October 2023.
