President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has instructed completing Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS) nationwide in 10 years rather than the originally legislated 15 year timeline, Finance Minister and UHIS chief Mohamed Maait announced. The six phase scheme was launched under Universal Health Insurance Law No. 2/2018 with a pilot in Port Said starting in 2019, and had been on track for full national coverage by 2032; the compressed timeline now targets completion by 2027. The first two phases, covering governorates including Port Said, Ismailia, Luxor, South Sinai, Suez, and Aswan, have been estimated at roughly EGP 166 billion, with more than EGP 51 billion already invested in upgrading healthcare facilities during phase one alone. Maait noted the president has continued pressing for adequate financial allocations to sustain the accelerated pace, framing UHIS as a core pillar of Egypt’s broader healthcare sector reform. |
