Egypt’s Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met with a World Bank delegation to discuss expanding healthcare cooperation, including continued implementation of the Universal Health Insurance System, local production of medicines and medical supplies, and private sector partnerships. The two sides reviewed ongoing and planned joint projects and ways to deepen government and private sector collaboration on advanced treatments, with discussions centering on upgrading hospital and health unit infrastructure and equipping facilities in governorates targeted under upcoming UHIS phases. The talks come as the World Bank’s dedicated UHIS support operation (Project P172426), a $400 million IBRD commitment against total project financing of roughly $2.8 billion, approaches its restructured closing date of September 30, 2026, itself a 23 month extension from the original October 2024 deadline, reflecting the project’s continued “Substantial” implementation progress rating and the government’s push to widen coverage and strengthen UHIS governance ahead of the next phases. |
