A regional market snapshot highlights continued growth across MENA’s healthcare and biotech sectors, with Egypt’s FY2025/2026 state budget allocating EGP 617.9 billion to healthcare as its Universal Health Insurance programme continues expanding toward nationwide coverage. According to the Egyptian Drug Authority, the country’s pharmaceutical market reached roughly EGP 422 billion, or about US$8.5 billion, in 2025, an increase of around 37 percent year on year, with domestic manufacturers now supplying about 91 percent of medicines consumed locally. Egypt’s ambitions extend beyond generic production, with rising investment in biologics, vaccine manufacturing, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and biosimilars aimed at strengthening higher-value pharmaceutical output and reducing reliance on imports. Saudi Arabia is pursuing a parallel path under Vision 2030, deploying substantial investment across hospital infrastructure, genomics, digital health, and medical research while encouraging private-sector participation to build a globally competitive life sciences industry. Together, the report frames these efforts as part of an increasingly integrated regional ecosystem spanning healthcare innovation, life sciences, and food security. |
