Jamal Nasher (Egypt) – Manager SDGs and Gender, Equity and Rights, WHO (EMRO).
Biography:
Public health expert with the strive to improve the health and the well-being of people and progress towards the goals of sustainable development. My competencies and values are integrity, openness, professionalism, and system thinking.
I am the Manager for SDGs and Gender, Equity & Human Rights with the WHO EMRO in Cairo, Egypt. My career spans over 29 years in public health with focus on health policy and strategic planning, health systems development, health finance and human resources, in addition to technical support and project management and operations in developmental and humanitarian contexts. I hold a Master of Health Policy, Planning & Financing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the London School of Economics and I am a medical doctor by profession.
In my current capacity, I technically lead the promotion of a coherent and region wide understanding of health in sustainable development, gender, equity and human rights. I lead the secretariat of the UN collaborative work in health through the coordination platform of the Regional Health Alliance.
I have worked in different capacities among which is the national health authorities and with the WHO country offices Pakistan, Sudan and Yemen. In these posts I have contributed to the development of key strategic documents, technical assistance, capacity budling in addition to graduate lecturing. I have the experience of leading sizable multidisciplinary teams, encouraging staff motivation and empowerment, creating a conducive work environment and focusing on achieving results.
I have held several lead positions in my career among which is being the Deputy Minister of Health in Yemen (2008 – 2014) and elected to be the chairperson of the PBAC under the WHO Executive Board (2012 – 2013). I have also been assuming the position of health systems coordinator and acting WR in WHO Pakistan.
