Biography:

Dr Nabil Kronfol is being honored for his significant contribution to public health, not only in his native land, Lebanon, but in the Eastern Mediterranean Region as a whole. Dr Kronfol graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1965 with a B.Sc. and in 1969 as Doctor of Medicine. He obtained a Masters in Public Health in 1973 and Doctor in Public Health (Health Services Administration) in 1979 from Harvard University. In 1974 he was appointed Assistant Professor at the American University of Beirut, becoming Associate Professor in 1979 and Professor of Health Services Administration in 1985. During his long and distinguished career of academic service, Dr Kronfol established several innovative institutions in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region: the College of Health Sciences, Bahrain; four schools of nursing in the United Arab Emirates; and the Planning Unit of the Ministry of Health, Lebanon, he also was instrumental in setting up a WHO-sponsored diploma in public health in Syrian Arab Republic, a masters in epidemiology in Egypt on behalf of the Arab Ministers of Health, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Aga Khan University, Pakistan. He served as adviser to the Ministers of Health of Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates, and as chairman of the Technical Committee for Health Reforms, Lebanon. A leading figure in health professions education, Dr Kronfol has been an active advocate of integration of health services and health professions education. He has conducted training courses throughout the Region and is the author of numerous publications.
