In one of the most significant governance decisions of the 79th World Health Assembly, Member States agreed to establish a joint process to support reforms of the global health architecture — to be led by Member States and hosted by WHO in collaboration with global health partners. The WHO Director-General was requested to submit a final report with options and recommendations to next year’s Assembly.
The decision reflects growing pressure to reshape international health cooperation in the wake of record aid cuts, geopolitical tensions, and the lessons of COVID-19. It comes as the Assembly also debated health impacts of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with specific focus on the protection of health care workers and facilities in conflict settings.
